LOVING, SERVING, AND GROWING THE KINGDOM ONE PERSON AT A TIME

John 15:7

"If you remain in me and follow my teachings, you can ask anything you want, and it will be given to you." (NCV)

What is God saying?

God's followers will not lack for anything, as long as they continue to follow Him.

What is God saying to us today?

It would be pretty amazing if being a Christian meant that we had Santa Claus on speed dial. In fact, that's what many preachers say that this verse means - and unfortunately a lot of Christians believe them. Yet, as we read through Scripture we find story after story of God's followers experiencing disappointment and not getting what they want (the story of John the Baptist especially comes to mind). And we know from our own experiences that God doesn't give us everything we want. So how do we make sense of this verse? We have to keep in mind that the main thing Jesus is talking about here is intimate relationship. And being in a relationship means you want the best for the other. If your best friend wants you to give him a cup of bleach to drink, would you do it? Of course not! Even though he might really, really, really want it you don't give it him, because ultimately that would destroy the relationship (by destroying your friend). So, Jesus is saying here that He will give us the desires of our hearts as long as it helps us to remain in relationship with Him.

What is God inviting us to do?

Are you desiring something at this moment that you wish God would provide for you? God invites us to ask Him, and expect that He will give it to us - as long as it won't damage us and our relationship with Him.
